How to telefabricate 41.700 protective visors for sanitary ware in 3 weeks of emergency. We have raised € 31,937.86 and manufactured 41.700 viseras protectoras.

The beggining

Monday 23 March Alberto Alarcón had the idea that it was possible to apply his experience in injection mold design in his company HOLEDECK for the manufacture of sanitary protective visors. His idea was to finance the project with part of the inheritance of our uncle Eladio Alarcón, who had just died in a nursing home in Madrid.

The idea was based on the manufacturing that the company was already making altruistically Artenea3D, making the headband using 3D printers that they themselves mounted and distributed directly to the toilets. Carmen from Artenea3D from the beginning contributed all her experience and direct contact with the healthcare personnel she was already helping.

The concept on which our entire project is based was to manufacture the headbands that support the entire structure of the mask industrially, using an injection mold that can print up to 4.000 daily units. Usually the creation of a mold of this type is a laborious process of several months, but how were we going to manufacture an injection mold in a few days??

We ripped

This is when it comes in Tooling Rodríguez, Javier tiene más de 10 años de experiencia en la fabricación de moldes de Inyección y ha sido uno de los pilares de todo el proyecto, usually the manufacture of an injection mold of these characteristics can take months; but reusing materials from other orders, with endless shifts and infinite dedication; they managed to finish it in a week.

The injection mold was designed in record time by HOLEDECK based on 3D printing designs that facilitated Artenea3D and that they had already been tested by health professionals. Luis Coronado y Javier Mayoral coordinan esfuerzos.En un solo día simplificó y adaptó el diseño de máscaras para que pudiese fabricarse con maquinaria de inyección .

After solving the technical problems and after the donation of the Alarcón family, managed and accepted in 10 minutes in the family WhatsApp group, we were already launched to manufacture.

How many were we going to make? The calculation was simple, we estimate that in 15 días ya no sería necesario este tipo de producto “de batalla” así que calculamos que éramos capaz de producir alrededor de 40.000 More expensive. With this amount we could protect the entire population of cities like Soria or Teruel.

Right now is when he comes in Curiosite in the project, a company specialized in e-commerce, design and logistics; who puts his team to work in the coordination and communication of the project. Emilio Alarcón (another Alarcón) is in charge of communication and the results are spectacular, the money starts coming quickly and the project appears on several televisions. Juan Sebastián Alarcón (more Alarcones) was in charge of all the coordination of the project.

People are tremendously generous and a large part of the project is financed with family and friends of all those involved in the project.. It is exciting to browse the list; donations of € 300 and, 200€ are more than frequent; it's also nice to see that a very simple equation holds, and that may surprise, who else has more donut…many of the donors are personal acquaintances and it is curious to see how the engineer donates € 300 and the thousand eurista € 50 … . Even a famous politician donates € 3,000!… too bad we can't give names, many would be surprised 😉

Through the blog seocatslife de Ayumi Nakai, the project also begins to be known in Japan, It is disclosed in various media and donations from individuals begin to be received. Clicking on this text you can see the information in Japanese

We have no staples!

Monday 30 Tooling Rodríguez already able to start producing parts, and that same day they are manufactured 3.000 units. The problem is that in a state of emergency and at the worst time, we have a hard time finding an item, a priori, So easy. This is when Nerea López, who goes crazy looking for material and among donations from neighbors with a megaphone, your stationery from the Carlin neighborhood, and donations from various offices… we get enough staples to start production.

Another problem would be the gums of the masks, we need 14 km from goma! we immediately run out of stock from local suppliers; that they give us at cost price all their merchandise. A small Galician company has transformed all of its clothing production into rubbers; and they offer us to be working all night so we can have them. In the end we managed to get a closed Barcelona factory to open only to serve us the necessary material.

The problem is that 14 km of rubber must be cut into pieces of 34 cm require 40.000 cortes. This is when Francisco José Cepeda joins as a volunteer, Community of Madrid firefighter; that together with a small army of family and friends achieve the miracle.

Another important element has been DINA 4 of transparent PVC, from the beginning we have the help and collaboration of Heraplast, Jose Manuel de las Heras was always attentive to the delivery of the material, going ahead and reserving material so that the project would not stop at any time.

People are desperate to help; is the feeling we have throughout this project; how easy it is to work like this despite the confinement. Companies that lower the price without warning, delivery of merchandise in impossible terms, material loans until you need it.

The first shipments

At this stage, end of March, ya estamos trabajando en el proyecto 12 people with maximum dedication and dedication, many of us combining with work in our companies in a difficult situation. Many of us working on this project have never seen our faces, just for your profile pictures… where you can see some photos of flags of Spain, from Morocco, from Japan, even some some republican. Here we work all in one…it would not be bad for some politicians to take an example.

Take advantage of the distribution network you have created Artenea3D to directly reach those who need it most, the first-line toilets. In this way, all intermediaries that could delay the arrival of the material are eliminated..

At this moment is when Jaime Herranz's project of Madrid Civil Protection, encourages us to make more units, and it gives us all its logistics channel so that the masks get where they are needed. Throughout the project Civil Protection has distributed 18.000 sanitary masks in residences, police corps, hospitals and volunteers.

The rest of the shipments are made using the entire infrastructure of Curiosite, especially thanks to the dedication of Yolanda Herranz. But the couriers are overflowing, and we need to resort (again) to volunteers. En seguida se une al equipo Leo Gonzalez que a partir de ahora será nuestro “conductor voluntario” y que se pasará todo el proyecto con su pequeño coche cargado de cajas recorriendo Madrid y alrededores.

This is war

Alberto Alarcón never tires of repeating that our masks are like the T34 tanks that won the Russians the second world war; tanks with a very spartan design and which allowed a faster manufacturing and repair. This is how our masks should be: Spartan and with a very high production.

When we were already with very advanced financing, the news emerged that the sanitary masks were not approved and that they would not be allowed to be used in medical centers.; At that time, in several hospitals in Madrid, it was the toilets themselves who improvised garbage bags with protective equipment.; At no time do we cease our efforts and continue with production because, for lack of anything else, they continue to desperately request material. Bureaucracy kills and it seems that there are people who do not understand in an emergency, emergency solutions are needed and what an emergency situation we are in right now…

Parte del proceso y algunas de las personas a las que hemos ayudado.

Almost a month has passed since we started making masks and the budget has been exhausted, it's a shame but we had to stop the machines; if any institution, government or organization needs us to restart production, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We are happy to see that our masks are beginning to become obsolete and that hospitals are beginning to have more quality material. The greatest success of this project is that it is no longer necessary.

On the other hand, from civil protection they tell us that the toilets are already receiving more PPE, so we understand that we can move to a less proactive position, since this project arose to alleviate a specific emergency.

Coordinating this project has been exciting and exhausting. We have been able to verify that situations like this bring out the best in everyone and we only have infinite gratitude to all the people who have collaborated. Boys, when all this is over we will have a party! and we will meet!

Report on Public Mirror de Antena 3 of the 2 April 2020.

From 2020, the energy consumption of buildings will be nearly zero (NZEB). But do we know how to achieve it?

Holedeck and Uponor have developed HOLEDECK ACTIVE BASIC an innovative thermally-activated concrete slab, result of the research project carried out with the participation of ¨Holedeck¨, the ¨Spanish Institute of Cement and its applications¨ and ¨Eduardo Torroja Institute of Building Sciences¨.

This Holedeck lightweight slab is already the most efficient solution of the market in relation to material consumption, minimizing the environmental impact. In addition, the use of perforations for the passage of facilities currently reduces the height required on the ground of non-residential building and promoting the possibility of having an additional plant for every x plants built. The design of the HOLEDECK ACTIVE BASIC slab allows integrating systems and elements specifically designed for standard modular ceilings, as well as geometries and adapt to conventional modulations.

In addition, this slab can thermally activate by the integrating system Uponor TABS (Thermal Active Building System). By a framework of integrated circuits into the slab, water runs into the structure previously heated or cooled by any source of renewable energy (geothermal, aerothermal, solar…) to modify the temperature of the concrete slabs and use its inertia. This way, the slabs contribute to cooling and heating the environment in a healthy way, silent, without air drafts and according to the needs and comfort of air conditioning required at all times.

HOLEDECK ACTIVE BASIC contributes to the achievements of buildings NZEB and European targets of Circular economy. Running costs are reduced by more than 30% regarding existing buildings, and energy consumption by up to 60%.

Structures that must resist seismic loads have to be designed and conceived under this premise from the very beginning of the process. This fact is so relevant that can (and should) affect in a general way the selection of the structural system.

In general, every seismic-resistant building consists of three types of elements:

Since installations have become a fundamental aspect of projects, with a significant presence in the overall budget, and volume of the building, designers have tried to integrate them as much as possible with the building, making them coincide with other architectural elements such as structure and envelope.

Welcome. From HOLEDECK we are convinced of the structure’s relevance in sustainability. We believe that future structures should have the smallest direct and indirect impact on the carbon footprint, should be flexible, and allow for versatility which translates in greater possibilities of configuration and uses, which can contribute actively and/or passively in the construction of nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB). That is our commitment.
